The smallest member of Volkswagen’s lineup has become even more stylish and vibrant. By late summer 2016, the second generation of the Volkswagen up! was launched across Europe, featuring redesigned bodywork, a fresh palette of colors, new wheels, expanded personalization choices, upgraded equipment, a revamped cabin, an updated infotainment system, and an impressive new engine delivering enhanced power and torque. The refreshed model made its public debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. For over five years, the VW up! has been one of Europe’s top-selling small cars, leading its class in markets like Germany and the Netherlands. Beyond Europe, it has also achieved remarkable success in countries such as Brazil, Japan, and South Africa.

New design and interior elements

Every version showcased at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show introduced fresh styling, including redesigned headlights with standard LED daytime running lights, updated bumpers, a striking rear diffuser, reworked tail lamps, and new mirror housings with integrated indicators. Customers also benefit from new seat fabrics, unique dashpad décor options, and expanded color choices. For the first time, the “Light and Sight” package — including “Coming home/Leaving home” functions and rain sensors — is available. Fog lights with cornering functions, a multifunction steering wheel, and Pure Air Climatronic automatic climate control with a biogenic filter that prevents allergens and pollutants, further enhance comfort.

New turbo engine

The standout highlight is the addition of the 1.0 TSI turbocharged engine. Delivering 66 kW/90 PS with a torque of 160 Nm from just 1,500 rpm, this three-cylinder power unit is the first turbo for the up! and the most powerful to date. It reaches a top speed of 185 km/h and accelerates from 0–100 km/h in just 10 seconds, rivalling the performance of the original Golf GTI. Despite its sporty character, it remains fuel-efficient at just 4.4 l/100 km, producing 102 g/km CO2, and can travel up to 800 km on one tank. A visible exhaust pipe underlines its dynamic edge.

Smartphone integration

The latest up! also embraces connectivity with an innovative smartphone dock. Once mounted and paired via Bluetooth, the phone transforms into a navigation and infotainment hub with access to multiple Volkswagen app features.

New up! beats with 300 W sound

In collaboration with BeatsAudio™, Volkswagen introduced the up! beats edition, designed for music enthusiasts. It includes a powerful 300 W sound system, smartphone integration, and unique design details.

Personalisation redefined

Volkswagen has amplified the fun factor with a wide array of customization options. Buyers can select from 13 exterior paint finishes (seven of them brand-new), 9 decal designs, 10 dashpad choices, three roof colors, multiple design and color packs, and interior trims in either Titanium Black or Ceramique. Premium models also offer ambient lighting and stylish alloy wheels for added flair.

Colour palette

Among the 13 shades available, new additions include Teal Blue, Coral Red, Costa Azul, Honey Yellow, Edelweiss, Blueberry, and Savanna Gold.

Dashpad options

Customers now have 10 new dashpad design options, created with innovative printing technology that allows for enhanced individuality.

Expanded engine range

Alongside the familiar 1.0 MPI petrol engines (60 PS and 75 PS), the lineup now includes the energetic 1.0 TSI (90 PS). Eco-conscious buyers can opt for the all-electric e-up! (82 PS) or the natural gas-powered eco up! (68 PS).

Equipment and trims

Volkswagen now offers seven trims: take up!, move up!, high up!, eco up!, load up!, cross up!, and e-up! Each trim features upgraded equipment.

• take up!: LED daytime running lights, LED license plate lighting, indicator-integrated mirrors, chrome trim, and central locking.

• move up!: New “Composition” radio, USB port, larger multi-function display, and “Black Cube” dashpad.

• high up!: White ambient lighting, “Pixels” dashpad, heated seats, multifunction steering wheel, fog lights with cornering, and new 15-inch Radial alloy wheels.

• cross up!: Orange ambient lighting and exclusive “cross-look” dashpad.

• e-up!: Blue ambient lighting, rain/light sensors, and enhanced smartphone connectivity.

Equipment packages

Additional personalization includes contrasting roof packs (black, white, or grey), design packs with decals and dashpad styling, and bold color packs with Hot Orange or Gold Beige accents, 16-inch alloys, and matching mirrors.

Up! beats – premium sound

The up! beats edition offers a 300 W, 8-channel amplifier with a digital signal processor, paired with seven high-end speakers including tweeters, woofers, broadband units, and a subwoofer in the spare wheel well. Unique styling features, special decals, and Beats-branded design touches make this edition stand out.

New infotainment systems

Volkswagen introduced two new multimedia options:

• Composition system: 3.1-inch display, twin tuner, AUX-IN, SD card slot, and CD player.

• Composition Phone system: 5.0-inch color display, Bluetooth with hands-free, optional rear-view camera, USB port, and compatibility with BeatsAudio™.

Both systems support DAB+ and Sound Plus packages.

Smartphone dock integration

With the “Maps + More dock,” Apple and Android smartphones can integrate seamlessly with the Composition Phone system. The Volkswagen app provides offline navigation, vehicle data, calls, energy-saving coaching, charging management for the e-up!, and advanced media controls.
